Weddings in Marrakech

Weddings in Marrakech normally stand for a particular style - bohemian and/or sumptuous.

We look at some classic weddings in Marrakech that have taken place recently, and see how each party managed to achieve its theme with the help of the beauty, sunshine and serenity of Marrakech.

    The Bohemian

    Poppy Delevigne and James Cook

When British socialite Poppy Delevigne got married in Marrakech in 2014 to her beau James Cook, it was the second of two nuptials she had organised to celebrate their union. The venue was La Mamounia, recently voted Best Hotel in the World by Conde Nast Traveller readers.

The guest list was a Who’s Who of ultra-cool celebrities - Sienna Miller, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Joan Collins, Matthew Williamson, Georgia May Jagger and Princess Beatrice - the cream of film, fashion and royalty.

The bride wore Pucci and there was an arrival rave, cocktail party around the pool, camel rides and a lot of bikini clad model guests. It was a classically British, hippy and aristocratic event, all done in the perfect Moorish splendour of La Mamounia hotel.

Marrakech provided the perfect antidote to the rather more formal wedding ceremony in London, which was sponsored by Hello Magazine, designed by Chanel and regarded as a far more stiffer affair.

    The Opulent

    Malick Mikati and Reef Hashem

The sheer scale of Mikati and Hashem’s wedding in Marrakech in April 2015 was completely off the scale. The cost of the wedding of the son of Lebanon’s richest man, and former prime minister, Najib Mikati, apparently came to nearly $25 million - around £8.5 million or 118 million Moroccan dirhams.

Taking place at the El Badi Palace, the event went on for three days - drawing famous guests such as designer Elie Saab (who designed the extravagant bridal dress) and Egyptian singer Amr diab.

1000 guests were estimated to have been in attendance. The party also included a wedding brunch at La Mamounia hotel which was all bank rolled by Mikati’s billionaire father.
